Must-Read Books for Cabin Owners and Off-Grid Living
As someone who built a bookshelf before building a bookcase (priorities, right?), I’ve read my way through most of what’s out there on cabin construction and off-grid living. Some of these books are genuinely excellent. Others are, well, better used as kindling. Here are the ones that actually taught me something useful — whether you’re still in the planning phase, mid-build, or just trying to keep your existing cabin from falling apart.

Building and Construction
The Log Cabin Book: A Complete Builder’s Guide
By Oliver Kemp
4.5/5 stars | 240 pages | $13.46
This is the one I recommend most often. Covers tree selection, notching techniques, foundations, roof framing, and finishing work. It’s thorough without being overwhelming — something a lot of building guides get wrong.
DIY Building Guide
Log Cabins: The Complete Guide to Building Your Own
By William Anderson
4.3/5 stars | Step-by-step instructions
Great for owner-builders who want practical, step-by-step guidance. Covers materials, tools, foundations, walls, insulation, weatherproofing, and ongoing maintenance. More hands-on than the Kemp book, less historical context.
Budget Building
Build a Log Cabin from Free Materials
By Robert Sims
4.0/5 stars | Budget-focused strategies
This one’s for the resourceful types. Teaches you to source free or very low-cost materials, work with reclaimed wood, and build a cabin on a genuinely tight budget. If you’re homesteading on a shoestring, it’s required reading.
